Reception in the kampong

27 September 2017 at 20:52

We were invited to the reception of Maman and Atma. Atma has been living in our village for more than 10 years, she went to school here and then did a study to become a teacher. She now teaches here at school. Maman comes from the nearest kampung where the wedding took place.

Sunday, September 17 was the big day that they got married. In the morning at church and then a reception from 2 to 8 o’clock. Unfortunately we could not go to the church in the morning. At 2 o’clock we arrived at the party at her home. We were awaited by a delegation, who found us white people interesting. The bride and groom looked beautiful in their Dayak clothes.

Upon entering, you put your name in the reception book and you get 2 sweets. Then you stand in line for a buffet of rice with chicken or rice with beef and atjar, and then you eat. Not at the table but on chairs that are placed in a row with the face to the stage where the bride and groom are sitting with their mutual parents.

Both the bridal couple and the parents are sitting there, motionless, without a smile, looking serious. After dinner you will congratulate them, a photo will be taken and then you leave. And that was it.

Later I asked someone why they looked so serious; the answer was: ‘Well, marriage is a serious business’. And so it is…

Another warm greeting from Borneo

God Bless
